Can You Choose Your Departure Airport When You Book a Private Jet?
Yes. You can request your departure airport when you book a private jet, and the choice is usually wider than with an airline. But your operator has to confirm it. The airport should accommodate the aircraft, have a slot/parking, and, for international flights, have customs and immigration.
Along with the “no timetable” aspect of private aircraft usage, the airport’s rules remain in effect. It’s important to be familiar with those rules up front in order to have a smooth private jet charter rather than a change of plan.
How Does Departure-Airport Selection Work?
- You set a desired airport and only a city, and you share desired timing and number of passengers.
- The operator is responsible for determining the appropriateness of the aircraft based on runway length, weight, temperature, elevation and weather.
- The next element around the airport is the availability of slots and parking lots, their schedule, ground handling services, and ground weather notices to airmen (NOTAMs).
- Permissions are secured, including customs and immigration arrangements for international flights.
- The operator confirms the airport, terminal or FBO, and your reporting time.
What Decides Whether An Airport Works for Your Flight?
Runway & Performance
Takeoff weight, temperature, elevation and length determine the length of the runway. While this is a good starting point, it’s not a sure bet.
Airport Ownership
Each of the Airports operated by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), State Government, Private Airport/Half Private Airport and Armed Forces has its own permission process.
Slots and Parking
Airports are busy, and schedules have to be coordinated for both arrivals and departures and especially parking for business aircraft.
Ground Handling
An FBO (fixed-base operator) or general aviation terminal handles passengers, fuel and the aircraft.
Customs and Immigration
Needed only for international departures, and only at certain airports.
Weather & Alternates
When planning a flight, it is necessary to consider a suitable alternate airport as a backup if the chosen airport is not usable.
What Does Airport Choice Look Like in India?
India has few standalone private airports. For most business flying, general aviation terminals and FBOs within commercial airports are the norm intended for this and, quite simply, is a matter of choice between one of the bigger airports and a smaller regional airport. Three details matter:
- Delhi: Two FBOs and an exclusive lounge for General Aviation passengers are available at Delhi Airport, Terminal 1 D, as mentioned on the Airport’s official website.
- Mumbai: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport has a general aviation building with parking space for approximately 24 aircraft. Since operations started at the NVI airport with commercial traffic in December, 2025, the airport authority has been facilitating the shifting of private jet parking facilities to the new airport, with little operation at the old airport taking place except for pick-up or drop-off facilities. It is possible, therefore, that ‘Depart from Mumbai’ refers to two airports. Confirm which one is booked.
- Temporary Limits: AAI has previously issued NOTAMs barring charter and other non-scheduled movements at Delhi during Republic Day preparations, while scheduled flights continued.
International trips add a rule. AAI’s Aeronautical Information Publication requires aircraft entering or leaving India to make their first landing or final departure at an international aerodrome, although a notified customs aerodrome may be permitted.
From a smaller airfield, an overseas trip typically starts with a domestic leg to a
customs-capable airport. Our guide to international private charter permits covers the paperwork.
Does Your Choice of Airport Change the Price?
Often, but rarely through the airport alone. If the aircraft is based elsewhere, the operator may need to fly it empty to your chosen airport, and that positioning flight can appear in your quote. Handling and parking charges also differ by airport.
It’s sometimes less time and money to travel a bit further away. Don’t automatically take the next airport; time based on door-to-door from origin to destination is to be taken into account.
How to Judge a Charter Operator on Airport Flexibility
Rankings of the best air charter companies in India usually compare fleets and prices. On airport access, these questions are more revealing:
- Does the operator hold a valid DGCA permit for non-scheduled operations? Check it against DGCA’s published list.
- Where are its aircraft based, and which airports does it fly regularly?
- Who arranges slots, permissions and ground handling?
- What is the plan if your airport becomes unavailable?
Club One Air operates from bases in Delhi and Mumbai. Its fleet page lists the Dassault Falcon 2000 and the Cessna Citation Excel, which the company describes as able to use smaller airports.
Owners face the same question from the other side: base airport, hangar space and overnight parking rules are part of what aircraft management services handle. For a wider comparison of terminals, see our guide to top airports for charter flights in India.
Plan the Airport Before the Flight
Treat the departure airport as part of the plan. Tell your charter specialist which airports you prefer and why, whether home, office or an onward connection, and ask for an alternative in the same quote.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
Can I choose a smaller airport instead of a major one?
Yes, provided the aircraft, the runway and airport permissions and ground handling facilities will permit it. Your operator confirms feasibility. Smaller airports may not have customs or a longer operating time/fuel.
Can a private jet land at any airport in India?
No. Runway length, the performance of the aircraft, permission to use the airport, the hours when the airport is in operation, as well as the availability of the aircraft to handle. There are numerous airstrips and airports in India, but not all of them are suitable for all jets.
Can I depart on an international flight from any airport?
A: No. Under AAI’s publication, departures abroad must leave from an international aerodrome, or from a notified customs aerodrome where permitted.
Q: When should I confirm my departure airport?
A: During the registration phase, near the ticket issue phase. Conditions may change with regard to the use of a slot (parking) or a NOTAM, particularly in busy metro airports and/or peak times.
Q: Is a private jet always cheaper from a smaller airport?
A: However, charges may vary, but any savings may be made up for by the repositioning flight and/or longer ground transfer. Don’t get a price per flight; get a total price.
